Walkersville Southern Railroad

Just 15 minutes north of the center of Frederick is Walkersville Southern Railroad, an old-school treat that’s enjoyable for everyone. While here, you can go on vintage 1920s passenger cars or take the open flatcar into the Maryland countryside, where you will be surrounded by farms and feel like you’ve been transported to the past. The trains you’ll ride on operate on the same rails that were originally built as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1872. Book the Little Red Caboose for a kid’s birthday party, making it an event they won’t soon forget. kid blowing bubbles

Catoctin Wildlife Preserve

Frederick County is home to Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, a 50-acre zoo and wildlife preserve that is supported by the Global Wildlife Trust. At this park, all members of the family can visit with more than 600 exotic animals, go on a one-hour safari adventure ride, or take part in an animal encounter. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve provides learning opportunities as well as the kids go on an educational journey through Africa, Latin and South America, Madagascar, Eurasia, North America, Australia, the Alligator Bayou, and the World Islands to discover the animals that live there.

Adventure Park USA

Just east of Frederick is Adventure Park USA, a 17.5-acre family-friendly indoor and outdoor park. You and your family can easily spend a whole day enjoying all the 20 activities, including bowling, laser tag, mini golf, Go Karts, gemstone mining, arcade games, a rock wall, and a high ropes course. If your kid is a little older and loves thrilling rides, get them on one of the roller coasters for some fast-paced twists and dips. You don’t even have to leave Adventure Park USA when it’s lunchtime; their full-service BBQ restaurant will satisfy everyone in the family.

I Made This! Pottery Studio

If you want to bring out your kid’s creative side (and get in on the fun yourself), take them over to I Made This!, a pottery studio where everyone can enjoy each other’s company while surrounded by color and creation. This is exactly the kind of place where it’s acceptable to get your hands dirty with pottery and paint, using items like sponges, glazes, brushes, stamps, and stencils to end up with a creation that’s all your own. If you’re feeling stuck creatively, I Made This! has plenty of idea books and sample pieces you can model your masterpiece after.

The best part of these attractions is they provide the perfect setting for some family fun. When you need a break from your home routine, venture out for something a little new. It just may end up being your new favorite spot.
