Downtown Frederick has something for everyone. If you are looking to avoid crowds, you may want to visit this area early in the day because it is popular with tourists and locals. While you are downtown, take some time to explore local shops like the Dream House at 102 E. Patrick St. It is a furniture store and design studio where you can find different types of home decor. Children may enjoy visiting Dancing Bears Toys and Gifts at 15 E. Patrick St. The store has toys and games for children of all ages.

Finish your time downtown by enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants. If you are in the mood for something sweet, check out Frederick Fudge and Ice Cream at 253 E. Church St. They offer a wide selection of sweet treats including ice cream, candies, and snow cones. If you are looking for something savory, try Frederick County’s original brewpub, the Brewer’s Alley Restaurant at 124 N. Ballenger Creek Park

Bring the family with you as you explore Ballenger Creek Park at 5420 Ballenger Creek Pike. The park opens at 8 a.m. every day. The kids will love the barrier-free playgrounds that are designed to help children of all ability levels have fun. There are also soccer fields, baseball fields with lights, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits for friendly competition. If you want to relax in nature, bring your backpack with some snacks and water, and explore the park’s 7-mile-long nature trail. There are picnic tables available for lunch or dinner during your time at the park.

Monocacy National Battlefield

Take a step back in time when you visit Monocacy National Battlefield. The battlefield is run by the National Park Service and is located at 4632 Araby Church Road. It is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to sunset and admission to is free. Monocacy was the site of the battle that saved Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. While at the battlefield, you can enjoy an audio tour from your car and learn about the history of the battle. It’s a self-paced tour, so you can explore each of the five stops as long as you want.

If you are looking for a new hiking destination, there are six different hiking trails on the property. They range in difficulty from easy to difficult. The shortest hike is the moderately tricky quarter-mile Middle Ford Ferry Loop Trail. The trailhead is the Thomas Farm Loop Trail, auto tour stop number four. The longest hike is the 1.9-mile Brooks Hill Loop Trail. You can access it from the trailhead at auto stop three, Worthington Farm.

Check the weather before you leave and dress appropriately for comfort. Bring your camera to capture the sites without disturbing them.
